Dubai Police And RTA Launch Heavy Vehicle Patrol Units

Dubai Police And RTA Launch Heavy Vehicle Patrol Units. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Dubai Police General Headquarters, has introduced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at improving road safety and regulating heavy vehicle operations across Dubai. The Joint Patrol Units for Heavy Vehicles Monitoring have been launched to ensure technical compliance and safety among heavy vehicles traveling on Dubai’s major roads. This partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing traffic enforcement, reducing accidents, and ensuring that Dubai remains a global leader in road safety.
A Strategic Move for Road Safety
The Joint Patrol Units for Heavy Vehicles will monitor compliance on six of Dubai’s most critical roadways: Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Khail Road, Ras Al Khor Road, Al Maktoum Airport Road, and Dubai-Al Ain Road. These patrol units will be responsible for conducting inspections, issuing fines for violations, and enforcing the city’s traffic safety standards.
His Excellency Major General Abdullah Ali Al Ghaithi, Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, expressed the importance of this initiative, stating, “The launch of Joint Patrol Units for Heavy Vehicles Monitoring is part of the ongoing cooperation between Dubai Police and RTA to implement the 5-Year Executive Plan for the Traffic Safety Strategy. This strategy focuses on four key areas: traffic monitoring and enforcement, road and vehicle engineering, traffic awareness, and the development of systems and management.”
Key Goals of the Joint Patrol Units
These Joint Patrol Units are not only focused on monitoring heavy vehicles but are part of a larger effort to create safer roads and prevent accidents caused by non-compliance. Major General Al Ghaithi highlighted the main goals:
- Enhance traffic safety: Ensuring that heavy vehicles follow traffic laws, such as speed limits and safe distances.
- Promote vehicle maintenance: Encouraging drivers to perform regular inspections and maintenance to prevent mechanical failures.
- Reduce serious accidents: The initiative is a proactive approach to preventing accidents involving heavy vehicles, which can be devastating due to their size and weight.
- Manage truck movements: Safely coordinating the movement of heavy vehicles to avoid congestion and minimize risks.
An Urgent Call for Compliance
In a public statement, Major General Al Ghaithi urged all heavy vehicle drivers to adhere strictly to traffic laws, conduct regular vehicle maintenance, and take necessary breaks to avoid fatigue during long journeys. He emphasized that distractions and improper vehicle inspections can lead to serious consequences, such as tyre blowouts or brake failures, which have historically been major causes of road accidents involving heavy vehicles.
Al Ghaithi also praised the strong collaboration between the Dubai Police and the RTA, which has greatly contributed to reducing traffic fatalities and furthering the goals of Dubai’s traffic safety strategy.
Focusing on Technical and Safety Standards
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, further elaborated on the role of the Joint Patrol Units, stating, “RTA and Dubai Police are working together to monitor heavy vehicles on highways, ensuring their compliance with technical and safety standards.” These inspections will focus on various key aspects of heavy vehicle operations, including:
- Tyre safety: Ensuring that tyres are in proper condition to prevent blowouts.
- Safety equipment: Verifying that each vehicle is equipped with necessary safety tools.
- Overloading and protruding cargo: Identifying vehicles carrying excess weight or improperly secured cargo, which can pose a serious risk to other road users.
- Lighting efficiency: Ensuring that all lights are working correctly, especially for night-time driving.
- Valid licence and permits: Checking that drivers have the correct documentation and are legally allowed to operate heavy vehicles.
These efforts will significantly boost the enforcement of traffic laws and ensure that all vehicles on Dubai’s roads meet the highest safety standards.
Supporting Dubai Vision for Zero Fatalities
The partnership between Dubai Police and RTA is an integral part of Dubai’s overarching vision of “Zero Fatalities”. According to Al Banna, this vision aims to make Dubai a global model for road safety. Remarkably, traffic-related fatalities have decreased by 93% between 2007 and 2023, showcasing the effectiveness of Dubai’s comprehensive approach to traffic management and enforcement.
Al Banna added, “The launch of Joint Patrol Units reflects the close collaboration between RTA and Dubai Police in achieving the goals of Dubai’s traffic safety strategy. We aim to strengthen enforcement against heavy vehicle violations and promote traffic safety for all road users.”
Expanding Logistics and Infrastructure
In addition to enforcing safety standards, the RTA is also working to enhance Dubai’s role as a logistics hub. With 73,861 registered heavy vehicles in the emirate, the RTA has undertaken several initiatives to modernize fleets, improve driver behavior, and implement eco-friendly practices. Al Banna noted that the RTA is committed to enhancing the competitiveness of Dubai’s land logistics sector by modernizing fleets with zero-emission vehicles, improving vehicle performance, and supporting SMEs in the transport industry.
Furthermore, the RTA has recently completed the construction of 10 truck rest stops out of 16 planned. These rest stops, developed in collaboration with ADNOC, are strategically located on major truck routes, such as Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai-Hatta Road, and Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road. Each rest stop covers an area between 5,000 and 10,000 square meters and provides parking for 30 to 45 trucks or heavy vehicles. These facilities are equipped with essential amenities such as prayer rooms, refueling stations, and rest areas for drivers, contributing to safer and more efficient long-haul transport operations.
Conclusion
The launch of Joint Patrol Units by Dubai Police and RTA marks a crucial step forward in enhancing road safety for all citizens and residents. Through a combination of rigorous vehicle inspections, strict enforcement of traffic laws, and ongoing efforts to improve the logistics infrastructure, these patrol units are poised to make a significant impact on heavy vehicle operations in Dubai.
